Description

Botanical name: Citrus Sinensis

Origin: Italy, Sicily

Appearance: red powder

BLORANGEX  is obtained from three varieties of sicilian blood oranges: Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello. These orange varieties grow in Italy, in particular in the eastern part of Sicily, where the pedoclimatic conditions and the presence of  the volcano Etna , makes it particularly suitable for their cultivation.

The feature of red oranges is the presence of high amounts of anthocyanin, a family of antioxidant pigments that cannot be found in other citrus, responsible for the deep red hue of the fruit. Anthocyanins develop when citrus ripen during warm days tempered with cooler nights, acting as a fruit protective system against extreme climatic fluctuations that occur in Sicily’s Etna area.

Together with other flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acids, anthocyanins represent the characteristic bioactive compounds of blood oranges. They are associated with antioxidant properties, prevention of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cancer. These biocompounds are also used in the treatment of capillary fragility and other diseases, whose etiology is attributable to the destructive action of free radicals. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that a standardized extract of blood oranges, rich in anthocyanins, is able to increase the antioxidant defenses in humans affected by diabetes, smokers and in those subjects who practice competitive sports.

BIOACTIVITY

The three varieties of blood oranges, Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello, are particularly rich in anthocyanins. Ten different molecules have been identified in blood oranges, seven of which are derivatives of cyanidin and three derivatives of delphinidin. Among them, the most representative are cyanidin-3- glucoside and cyanidin-3- 6 ”-malonylglucoside. They act synergistically with the glycoside flavanones (hesperidin, narirutin and didymine), hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic, coumaric, ferulic and synapic) and vitamin C, and play a key role in the protection of our body from the effects of free radicals, which are the cause of degenerative diseases and skin aging.
